Stade Sylvio Cator - Port au Prince

Edel Grass participates in the reconstruction of Haiti

This summer Edel Grass has completed a special international project. In Stade Sylvio Cator in Port au Prince (Haiti), the old artificial turf pitch has been replaced by a beautiful new one. The old pitch did no longer met the essential playing characteristics and needed to be renovated. After the earthquake, the pitch even served as camp for the homeless people. To stimulate the renovation of Haiti, FIFA has selected this location for a FIFA Goal project.

Edel Grass prepared the design for the new pitch and has been selected by FIFA for this project. The site was ready for the renovation in January 2011. The new pitch has been produced in the Netherlands and sent by container, together with all the other material.

At the site, Edel Grass and its local partner started with the reconstruction of the sub base and drainage. It was rather clear that people wanted the stadium to be ready as soon as possible. People asked for progress over and over again and they were involved in the process as much as possible. As media was very excited about the new pitch, Edel Grass became an hot item in newspapers and on television.

Edel Grass started with the installation of the artificial turf in July. Our own installers flew to Haiti to install the artificial turf, in close collaboration with the local partner. In early August the pitch was handed over to the football federation. Meanwhile, the national football team played their first World Championship qualification match in the renovated stadium. They won the match in a packed stadium with 6-0. An excellent result on the FIFA** artificial pitch built by Edel Grass!
