Update regarding end-of-life artificial grass recycling
In the third week of January we informed you that the major artificial grass suppliers and contractors in the Netherlands had launched an Alliance of collaborating artificial grass producers and contractors (Alliantie van samenwerkende kunstgrasproducenten en -aannemers). This letter is to update you on the important steps that have been taken since then towards opening a recycling plant for high-quality circular processing of artificial grass.

Emergency facility in Hoorn open with immediate effect.
As there is currently great demand in the Netherlands for an organisation that can provide a responsible collection service for artificial grass, the Alliance is offering a temporary emergency facility for acceptance and storage with immediate effect. This facility at Schelphoek in Hoorn will provide an immediate solution for the many parties in the Netherlands who do not currently have any options for disposing of their end-of-life artificial grass. We give you our assurance that all processing will be in a sustainable and responsible manner. The Hoorn facility is a fully licensed location for acceptance of such materials.

Controlled temporary storage facility at a central location in Amsterdam
In addition to the emergency facility, the Alliance anticipates being in a position to open another facility for the controlled temporary storage of artificial grass in the near future. The intended location is in the Westelijk Havengebied (western harbour area) in Amsterdam. The licensing procedure – which is being carried out in close consultation with the Port of Amsterdam, the municipality of Amsterdam and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management – is now in its final stages. We therefore expect to be able to guarantee, in the near future, safe acceptance at a temporary location complying with all the guidelines and criteria. By setting up this facility, the Alliance is also ensuring responsible acceptance of artificial grass mats during the period prior to opening the permanent recycling plant.
Construction and opening of the plant
Our work involved in obtaining the licences for the temporary location is running parallel with our consultations with the abovementioned parties in order to obtain licences for the recycling plant’s final location. The intended location is on the Santoriniweg in Amsterdam’s port area: in the heart of the so-called circular cluster where several circular businesses operate. The arrival of the plant will blend in seamlessly with the circular ambitions of the Port of Amsterdam, the municipality of Amsterdam and national government. The Alliance is also focussing on this site because of its central location and easy accessibility – including by ship.
The recycling plant will soon be available on equal terms to all suppliers, contractors and customers in the Netherlands. Customers can arrange for the artificial grass to be collected and processed by the Alliance via their contractors and/or suppliers, or, if they prefer, they can also supply the artificial grass pitches directly. When it is opened, the recycling plant will offer more than enough capacity for all artificial grass sports pitches that are replaced each year in the Netherlands.
As soon as the licensing process is finished, we will make an immediate start on the construction and layout of the recycling plant, which will be called GBN Artificial Grass Recycling. We will keep you informed of the progress of the work. The Alliance would like to emphasise again that it is possible for you to have your end-of-life artificial grass collected with immediate effect: this service is already available at the emergency facility in Hoorn and is expected to be available in the near future at the temporary location in Amsterdam.

Update betreffende recycling van end-of-life kunstgrasvelden
In de derde week van januari ontving u van ons het bericht dat de grote kunstgrasleveranciers en –aannemers in Nederland de Alliantie van samenwerkende kunstgrasproducenten en -aannemers zijn gestart. Met deze brief brengen wij u op de hoogte van de belangrijke stappen die sindsdien zijn gezet richting de opening van een recyclingfabriek voor hoogwaardige, circulaire verwerking van kunstgras.
Wij werken op dit moment aan de volgende stappen:

Noodfaciliteit in Hoorn per direct open
Omdat er in Nederland momenteel een grote vraag bestaat naar een partij die op verantwoorde wijze kunstgras kan innemen, biedt de Alliantie per direct een tijdelijke noodfaciliteit voor inname en opslag. Met deze faciliteit op de locatie Schelphoek te Hoorn bieden wij een onmiddellijke oplossing voor de vele partijen in Nederland die op dit moment niet over innamemogelijkheden voor oud kunstgras beschikken. Dit geschiedt uiteraard onder de garantie en zekerheid van duurzame en verantwoorde verwerking. De faciliteit in Hoorn is een volledig vergunde locatie voor deze inname.

Gecontroleerde tijdelijke opslagfaciliteit op centrale plek in Amsterdam
In aanvulling op de noodfaciliteit verwacht de Alliantie op korte termijn een voorziening voor gecontroleerde tijdelijke opslag van kunstgras te kunnen openen. De beoogde locatie ligt in het Westelijk Havengebied van Amsterdam. Het vergunningstraject – dat in goed overleg met het Amsterdamse havenbedrijf, de gemeente Amsterdam en het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat wordt doorlopen – bevindt zich in de afrondende fase. Zo verwachten wij op korte termijn veilige inname te kunnen garanderen op een tijdelijke locatie die aan alle richtlijnen en criteria voldoet. De Alliantie draagt hiermee ook zorg voor verantwoordelijke inname van kunstgrasmatten voorafgaand aan de opening van de permanente recyclingfabriek.
Bouw en opening fabriek
Parallel aan de vergunningen voor de tijdelijke locatie werken wij in goed overleg met
bovengenoemde partijen aan de vergunningen voor de definitieve locatie voor de recyclingfabriek. De beoogde locatie ligt aan de Santoriniweg in het Amsterdamse havengebied: midden in het zogenoemde circulaire cluster waar verschillende circulaire bedrijven actief zijn. De komst van de fabriek sluit naadloos aan bij de circulaire ambities van het Amsterdamse havenbedrijf, de gemeente Amsterdam en de landelijke overheid. Daarnaast zet de Alliantie in op deze locatie vanwege de centrale locatie en de goede bereikbaarheid – ook per schip.
De recyclingfabriek is straks onder gelijke voorwaarden beschikbaar voor iedere leverancier, aannemer en opdrachtgever in Nederland. Opdrachtgevers kunnen via hun aannemer en/of leverancier het kunstgras laten innemen en verwerken bij de Alliantie, of indien gewenst ook rechtstreeks de kunstgrasvelden aanbieden. De recyclingfabriek biedt na opening ruim voldoende capaciteit voor alle kunstgrassportvelden die in Nederland jaarlijks vervangen worden.
Zodra de vergunningverlening rond is, starten wij direct met de aanleg en inrichting van de recyclingfabriek, die de naam GBN Artificial Grass Recycling krijgt. Over de voortgang van dat proces zullen we u goed op de hoogte houden. De Alliantie benadrukt graag opnieuw dat de inname van oud kunstgras per direct mogelijk is: nu al bij de noodfaciliteit in Hoorn en naar verwachting op korte termijn op de tijdelijke locatie in Amsterdam.
